Gatchaman Versus Turtle King

Jun also known as G-3/Jun the Swan, is the team's electronics and demolitions expert. Her Bird Style is based off of the Swan. Her workplace, GoGo Cafe Snack J, serves as the gathering place for the Science Ninja Team which also serves as hers and Jinpei's home.

Background[]

While Jun never knew her parents, one of them was Japanese and the other was American. After their deaths and her transfer to an orphanage, she at one point had fled to the Jupiter Mountains to escape the war[1] and found a toddler that she named "Jinpei". The two would grow up in the Shirayuki Orphanage under the care of the United Nations, and they eventually came under the wing of Dr. Nambu after Jun turned 13.

In a possibly-apocryphal article in Asahi Sonorama's Fantastic Graphics TV Anime Collection volume 3, this backstory is expanded upon. Besides Jun's parents dying shortly after her birth, she was then taken in by an aunt, who had perished in a war with a neighboring country when she was approximately around 8 or 9 years old. It was then that she would run away to escape the fire-bombing caused by the war, and her meeting with Jinpei and their transfer to the Shirayuki Orphanage would unfold. Its canon to the original series is debated, as no one involved with the series seemed to have written the backstory and it was an answer to a fictional "interview" with the team members. However, Hisayuki Toriumi was in charge of other content in the volumes, leaving this as some possible canon intended at the time.

At some point after she was taken in by Dr. Nambu, Jun met a young man named Koji and the two became good friends (or boyfriend and girlfriend, as in the initial intent) before he disappeared; in the time he had been missing, he had joined Galactor while she had become the Swan of the Science Ninja Team.

OVA version[]

The second light novel tie-in to the OVA series gives more information on their version of Jun, in that her parents were killed in an attack by nuclear terrorists. Her biracial status is retained, although one of her parents is now said to come from England.

After being assaulted in her early teens, she joined a motorcycle gang for protection. Jun has worked multiple jobs in her young life, including that of a club owner and swimming instructor at the resort, as well as dabbling in being a model and a ballerina. It is also said that due to her heavy trauma she experienced through her youth, she is more withdrawn and does not seek out any lover.

Cancelled Imagi Film Project[]

While the context of Jun's backstory is currently unknown, the toyline for this movie had a profile alluding to her situation:

Orphaned at a young age due to a tragic accident, Jun has now matured, living alone but still in search of a familiar unit. Bartends at a local Utoland night club.

Going by these implications, it would appear that she and Jinpei did not have a sibling relationship, at least in earlier drafts, and Jinpei's role was left more limited as "the child of the team".

Appearance[]

Jun

Jun

Jun is a young woman with dark green hair and green eyes. In the first series, her hair slightly extends beyond her shoulders, and curls up at the ends. Her hairstyle was slightly modified for both sequel series, to have her hair be straighter and a somewhat brighter shade of green.

Her civilian clothing usually consists of a red-and-navy t-shirt with a pink number "3" insignia, as well as pink-and-white striped bellbottom pants. In the sequel series, her civilian uniform is changed so that she wears a pink crew-neck "3" t-shirt and white capri pants.

Her bird style features a pink sleeveless mini-dress, white elbow length gloves, white over-the-knee go-go boots, and a white cape colored red on the inside. Jun's swan-like helmet features orange highlights and a light orange visor, as well as an antenna in the back.

OVA[]

Jun's design was heavily modified for the OVA remake. While still meant to be sixteen years old (as in the original series), Jun is designed to be taller and more physically developed, with a larger bust size. Her hair was also changed to be a short brown bob cut, as opposed to long and green.

Her Bird Style was also modified, with the dress being pink-and-white, with a split skirt. Rather than the "G" belt, she bears a modernized "G" symbol in the middle of the dress.

She also forgoes a numbered T-shirt to instead wear a "3" necklace with her civilian clothing, a pink midriff-baring top and green striped skirt. She is also shown to wear a red and black motorcycling suit in her first appearance.

Cancelled Imagi Film Project[]

Jun's uniform in the Imagi film underwent various drafts, although an earlier design appeared to be a cross between her original uniform and the one seen in NTT Gatchaman: She would wear an armored pink-and-black dress, pink-and-black armored thigh-high boots, black gloves, and a black cape.

Another draft seen in other concept images had Jun wearing her OVA uniform, while the later animation tests and revisions of the trailer gave Jun her original outfit back but with some updates like visible seams, a raised emblem, and pink contrasting parts to her gloves and boots.

Jun's civilian look in storyboard reels and 3D character renders seemed to also be undecided, although her hair color was consistently dark brown. Early renders depicted her hair as long as the original series, before shortening it slightly and giving her a white hairclip (as seen in workprint footage from the Munroe/Dini iteration), until it was decided to give her a much shorter, flipped-up bob cut in the spirit of the OVA. Her outfit also went through notable variations in color and details, although the basic pieces remained the same; she would wear a jacket over a camisole, have a pair of short shorts, and long boots (with or without stockings).

Personality[]

Jun is a brave and independent young woman who likes to ride her motorcycle in her free time, when she's not busy working at the Snack J. In the battle against Galactor, Jun takes her role very seriously and tries to look out for her team. She is easy-going, but can be quite sensitive and with a strong motherly instinct.

Her role on the team includes data analysis and processing, and expertise in explosives and other hazardous materials. No matter how much danger she may be in, she stays calm and will strategize a way to get out. She is also quite skilled in karate and aikido, while being a fun-loving "go-go girl" type.

Relationships[]

Jinpei[]

Jun knew Jinpei from childhood, having found him as an infant in Mount Jupiter. She took him back to the orphanage she resided at, and raised him as her younger brother. She takes care of Jinpei both on and off the field.

Like most siblings, although they love each other, they often argue and tease. She relies on Jinpei to handle the cooking at the Snack J, as she can barely cook anything herself.

Ken Washio[]

Jun works with Ken more than the other members of the team. Despite having the same guardian, Jun does not consider Ken as her brother. She starts to develop romantic feelings for Ken, often being concerned for him whenever Ken gets himself down. Jinpei teases Jun about this, to which Jun usually tells him off. She gets a little irritated when Ken does not return her affections or show no interest in the relationship, with him being more dedicated to their mission.

Weapons and Arsenal[]

Fighting Style[]

Jun's style of Science Ninja fighting uses agile movements that tends to include high kicks that expose her thighs; this kick is known as the Lightning Kick in outside materials and the full opening theme, though never named in the show itself [2]. She is also great at spinning and jumping.

When it comes to weaponry, Jun is skilled in explosives and in using items that can be flails.

Weapons[]

  • Yo-Yo: A special reinforced yo-yo that serves as Jun's primary weapon in the original series, it can be used as a whip and as a flail. She can also attach sharp implements to the yo-yo, or load it with explosives and a run a current through the string to cause it to detonate. In the OVA, the Yo-Yo had an electrified string that shocked her opponents on contact.
  • Aurora Ribbon: A gymnastics ribbon that serves as Jun's primary weapon in Gatchaman II. Jun tended to use it as a whip or a grappling rope.

  • Elenettor: A bracelet weapon that Jun wears on her right forearm that fires an energy beam.

Jun's bombs[]

  • Shoe bomb: Episode 19 of the first series shows that Jun keeps plastic explosives hidden in the heel of her shoe. She demonstrates this ability, taking the explosive out and proceeding to detonate it.
  • Lipstick bomb: In the OVA, Jun used miniature bombs that were disguised as lipstick and could to stick to walls.

  • "Horseshoe crab" Bomb: An explosive seen in the 2007 trailer for the cancelled Gatchaman animated film from Imagi Studios. The concept never made it into the 2011 trailer, so it was likely dropped from the film some time during production.

G-3 Mecha[]

G-3: A 700CC motorcycle seen in the original series, as well as being the basis of her vehicle in some remake projects. When transformed, it becomes a special motorcycle that can travel on water and hover in the air, and known as the Sonic Car.

Auto Swan: Jun's motorcycle in Gatchaman II. While it lacks the hovercraft function of it's predecessor, the Auto Swan is a fast and powerful motorcycle equipped with twin missile launchers and rocket boosters.

Appearances in Other Media[]

Anime[]

Yatterman (2008)[]

Jun first appears in a cameo in episode 2, enjoying takoyaki along with Ken. They are depicted in their original series designs.

Yatter Cameo

She next appears in the hour-long special "Episode 12.5", with the rest of the team, to stop the Doronbo Gang from stealing a ring. However, her face was obscured by her visor.

Time Bokan (OVA, 1994)[]

In the second episode of the Time Bokan OVA, The Dornobo Gang are ordered by their boss to find the Tatsunoko Kingdom and steal a gem from a statue in the center of the city. While preparing for the job, Boyacky remembers about the time six odd characters (The Science Ninja Team and Dr. Nambu) walked into his noodle shop, ordered six egg croquette noodles and left without paying. When he tried to confront them about it, they went down a manhole with the Tatsunoko logo on it and escaped. The Doronbo Gang then deduces that this is where the entrance to the Tasunoko Kingdom must be. The Doronbo then attack the city and all the old Tatsunoko superheroes try to stop them, including the Science Ninja Team.

Jun then tells Ken that Ryu, Joe and Jinpei went home because they were bored and upset that they didn't get to say any lines. Ken then states that as a hero of justice, fighting high school girls is not his style. Jun misinterprets this as Ken having a high school girl fetish and that he likes younger women. To which Polymar teases Ken about it. Ken then roundhouse kicks Polimar for his mockery. Ken tries to patch up with Jun, but makes things worse by stating that women blossom after thirty, which Jun is insulted by because she's still in her 20s. Both Polymar and Jun are enraged and proceed to beat Ken up. The Mecha, taking advantage of their bickering, blasts them. Noticing Jun down in the rubble, Boyacky and Tonzura pick her up with the mecha and ogle her as she pleas for help in suggestive poses.

Jun in Peril

Doronjo, jealous of Jun trying to be sexier than her, rattles Jun by shaking her using Sailor Mun Mun and then tosses her with a baseball-style pitch.

Yatterman-1 and 2 catch her in mid-air and rescue her but then Yatterman-1 accidentally drops her during their usual schtick of announcing their arrival to their archenemies. Jun lands safely on Omotchama's head. After a brief, standard episode style fight, the OVA ends.

When the five were shown in their civilian clothing, Jun and Jinpei were depicted in their clothing from the original series while the other three wore their Gatchaman II/Fighter streetwear.

Wonderful Tatsunoko Land (TV Special, 1999)[]

Jun and the rest of the Science Ninja Team have a brief guest spot in this New Years Eve special that brought together various characters from the Tatsunoko franchises.

Video Games[]

Jun is a playable character in the fighting games Tatsunoko Fight and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

Alterations in International Adaptations[]

This section below deals with various name changes, rewrites, or cases of censorship that Jun would undergo in foreign versions of Gatchaman.

South Korea[]

Eagle 5 Brothers[]

Jun was renamed Yumi in the original Tongyang Broadcasting Channel dub. When the first series was redubbed in the 1990s, her name became Suna instead and it carried over to the sequels of II and Fighter.

Compilation film of "Eagle 5 Brothers"[]

In this compressed adaptation of II, Yumi does not get much major screen-time although one scene suggests that she and Changsu have feelings for each other when they stop to flirt during a battle.

USA[]

In an attempt to tone down on the weak points of Jun's character, some of the earlier English adaptations starting with Battle of the Planets changed her dialogue to make her appear even more intelligent and more sarcastic, as well as expanding her talents on the team (such as making her a code-breaker and translator in addition to a demolition expert).

Battle of the Planets (1978)[]

Known as Princess in this version, her relationship with her commander is also expanded upon, with Mark openly reciprocating her feelings and the two appearing to be more like boyfriend and girlfriend. However, her job of owning the Snack J was changed to her only working part-time, with the "J" explained away as standing for her friend's name (Jill). A notable change in her backstory is that Princess states once that she can remember her mother, and felt devastated at losing her.

She is beloved by the mascot robot 7-Zark-7, who says he likes to pay special attention to her. She tends to stop by to visit him in his command room from time to time, and likes to kiss him on his head, which causes him to become greatly flustered.

Princess retains a sibling-like relationship with Keyop, even if his backstory was changed to remove her involvement in his early life.

As with other members of G-Force, Princess is stated to have "cerebonic implants" that are responsible for her high martial arts skill. These implants are not delved into much more, but it is said the G-Force teenagers have had these since birth (though "cerebonic" would imply something to do with their brain, and the possible location of such devices).

G-Force: Guardians of Space (1987)[]

Her name was changed to Agatha June, paying some homage to her original name, although she was also often called "Aggie" as a nickname. Her role and personality remain otherwise closer to the original, although the edits made to the series mean she doesn't get slapped around the way Jun would for disobeying or upsetting Ken and Joe.

In the case of episode 56, the script in the dubbing reflects the early intent of Jun having a past romance and directly states that Aggie and Tony were girlfriend and boyfriend. Some additional changes in the scripting of that specific episode, however, also have her imagining her lost lover telling her to wait for him and that they'll meet again some day, changing the ending message somewhat.

An earlier, failed attempt at the G-Force adaptation had her name given as Rachel in its pitch pilot.

While the series does not ID her Bird Style within dialogue, the opening states she "Flies like a dove" (yet strikes like a falcon).

Eagle Riders (1996)[]

This adaptation (sourcing from Gatchaman II and Fighter) gave her the name of Kelly Jennar, providing a surname and another explanation for the "J" at the snack bar. Kelly's characterization was also tweaked, as Princess and Aggie were, to make her come off stronger and more assertive of a character and one who wouldn't easily be condescended to or felled. She also refers to Joe as a self-pitying crybaby for his angst over being a cyborg, yet is still determined to assist him and appears to deeply like him.

There is also an attempt to play up Kelly's technological expertise better through altered dialogue, in order to sell her as an equally capable team member rather than having her come off as "the girl". This is also reflected when Dr. Aikens compliments her on being a smart and capable engineer, as opposed to Dr. Pandora complimenting Jun on being pretty.

Rather than Kelly's Bird Style being that of the Swan, hers was stated to be "Dove".

Countries that aired their own dubs of this English adaptation would tend to carry over her new name and Bird Style, although the Italian version would revert her to be "Jun the Swan".

Italy[]

As Gatchaman: Battaglia dei Pianeti was mainly based from Battle of the Planets, the characterization tweaks in the 85 episodes sourced from that version are present for Jun. She is renamed Pretty Jun in this version, although some merchandise also uses the spelling of Pretty Jane.

France[]

The French La Bataille des Planetes would call her Princesse. In the 1986 Gatchaman II compilation film dub, the equivalent character would be known as Jane.

Voice Actors[]

Jun was voiced by Kazuko Sugiyama in the original franchise, as well as in her cameo in the Time Bokan OVA.

Michiko Neya voiced the version of Jun in the 1994 OVA remake, which featured a more modern pool of voice actors.

English Adaptations[]

  • Battle of the Planets: Janet Waldo
  • G-Force: Guardians of Space: Barbara Goodson (Sparklin Entertainment), Faith Salie (Media360 Group pilot)
  • Eagle Riders: Heidi Noelle Lenhart
  • OVA: Lara Cody (Harmony Gold 1997 dub), Kim Prause (redub)
  • Time Bokan: Royal Revival: Ami Shukla
  • Battle of the Planets: The New Exploits of G-Force (pilot): Nicole Oliver
  • ADV/Sentai dub of first series and movie: Kim Prause

Trivia[]

  • There is debate and speculation over just how much time exactly may pass in the original Gatchaman franchise (when considering the out-of-universe airing of the show, or some events within the series itself seeming to reflecting time such as Galactor's first war taking "a year and 10 months"). This in turn would affect the interpretation of Jun's age in the sequels, which start two years after the original. No official age settings were given beyond the first series, leaving some to assume Jun would start off 18 in Gatchaman II, if not keeping the "real time" factor of the original series in mind.
    • In calculating age vs. what's known of some time passage in the original show and sequels, Jun would start her adventure at age 16 and be at least 18 by the end of the first series (depending on when her birthday may fall). Adding two years on for Gatchaman II would make her at least 20, and a year added through the series and through Gatchaman Fighter would bring her to 22.
    • However, even as time may seem to be referenced to have passed in the first series, Jun is still mentioned to be "16" in episodes as late as episode 74. As the first series was not intended to run over more than a year, it is likely the staff had not considered aging the characters and the lack of any age mentions in the sequels is to treat them as "ageless" or leave it up to fans' discretion as to how old they may be.
    • A popular fanon birthday for Jun picked out in the Japanese fandom as far back as the 1970s, but which is not official by Tatsunoko, is May 2nd, making her a Taurus.
    • Some may also note the incredulous plot point in episode 56 of the original series, where Jun and Koji were stated to have known each other three years prior, which would make Jun around 13 at the youngest while she still appeared exactly the same in flashbacks and already had a motorcycle (leading to the joke that she must have had a special license like Jinpei, or had been riding it illegally). If Koji had also already been a motorcycle racer then, it leads to questions over whether or not he was intended to be the same age as Jun (and leading to similar jokes of underage racing) or older (leading to fans drawing unfortunate implications about a possible age gap).
  • Before ADV's dub went with staying with the original names and plot, the first dub of the OVA stayed the closest to keeping her name, Westernizing it in spelling to "June".
  • The Top Cow "Princess" mini-series goes with the setting that Princess' actual name is Jun, as well as having her wear the clothing of the OVA version of Jun while on break from the team. A bartender at the Club J is given the design of OVA Jun herself, but named "Miya" (likely after a famous Gatchaman OC at the time, who also showed up in the main Top Cow series). The Top Cow continuity also has her age raised up a year for Jun/Princess to be 17.
  • Jun would be sourced for the heroine Seon in the Korean mockbuster Iron Man 007, although the character design would be changed somewhat for the actual movie past the opening credits. Like the early draft settings for Jun, Seon is the second-in-command/"2" of the team.
  • The live-action film by Nikkatsu gave their Jun counterpart a surname of "Ohtsuki", although it is an alternate continuity and has no sort of basis in any of the original documents.
  • Jun's originally intended motif as the second-prominent character is reflected in the ending sequence, where she and Ken are the only Science Ninja Team members to get solo images (and she is depicted standing second in the line-up, see "Development Period" for more information). This would have followed on previous action series by Tatsunoko with the heroine and love interest type character put in that ranking, seen with Michi Shimura in Mach Go Go Go and Miki Kazemaki in Sky Fighter Z and then continued with heroines in the Time Bokan series.
  • Jun's Bird Style name may be infamously stated incorrectly in some anime guides of the '70s and '80s, in using the term hakucho instead of shiratori (although both are names to describe a Swan in Japanese), thus printing her as Hakucho no Jun (はくちょうのじゅん).

Development Period[]

  • While Jun lacked a surname in the final product, early Gatchaman planning materials had her name as Jun Shiratori (白鳥ジュン)[3]; the Swan naming scheme would only be utilized as her Bird Style theme in the end. In the finalized notes, it is said Jun's full name is unknown, and that Jun itself may even be an alias.[4]
  • Early planning documents and character models had Jun as the second-in-command of the team, also bearing a "2" on her shirt and giving her more focus in the series[5] (and more of a possible relationship angle with Ken). As plans changed throughout pre-production, Jun instead became "3", although a blooper at the end of Revenge on the Iron Beast Mechadegon briefly depicts her with a "2" on her shirt (as the animator was relying on the old model sheets; Joe also appears with a "3" on his). The script for The Mecha Ball Runs Wild also mistakenly has Jun refer to herself as "G-2" (g-niigou) in the original Japanese track, showing a lack of correction done in the recording stage, while the ADV Films dub corrected this error.
  • One particularly early character design of Jun depicted her with a short bob cut, as well as using a fencing sword as her weapon[6].
  • In notes for the character's inspiration, Satoshi Suyama wrote that she would be modeled after the actress/model Yuko Enatsu[7].
  • In the earlier documents, Jun Shiratori was a part-time worker at a pharmaceutical company and also enjoyed baking, having an aspiration to open her own cake shop. She was also described as a high-school drop-out, living in a Marine Club named "Shell", and being a world-class fencing champion (explaining the sword in the early character design)[8]. Another early detail included Jun Shiratori's father having been a worker at an Explosives Research Institute, but that he had perished in an explosion there. Many of these character notes changed to instead have Jun be a young club owner to further emphasize her "go-go girl" nature, and as shown in the series, the finalized Jun is rather poor at cooking (which would make a cake shop dream quite disastrous).
  • A piece of early watercolor artwork by Ippei Kuri shows Jun to have blonde hair, and her "G-2" motorcycle to have been intended to be blue. A later artwork, after she was switched to being "3", would show her to have black hair until it was decided to make her hair green to make her stand out from the other team members. Her T-shirt color scheme also changed from having violet sleeves and light blue contrast on the collar and sleeves, to the sleeves being navy blue and the contrast stripes to be red and navy (on sleeves and collar respectively).

Apocryphal Sequel and Remake Plans[]

New Science Ninja Team Gatchaman/Science Ninja Team Gatchaman II (1978)[]

  • Jun was to be the one to first discover Joe was a cyborg, and keep his secret up until it became revealed to the rest of the team during what would've been the final episodes. She and Joe would also develop romantic interest in one another through this [9][10]. However, as plans were made early on to extend the series for a full year, this setting was discarded and the Dr. Pandora character was created as a way to break the word to the team on Joe's cyborg nature, as well as further the mystery of Gel Sadra's plot.
  • A redesign of Jun's civilian wear for this series, likely nixed for simplification reasons, depicts her wearing a pink "3" hooded sweatshirt and white leggings, as well as having her hair tied back into a ponytail. She would also have a pink mini-purse to match the color of her sweatshirt. It appears the puffy nature of the sweatshirt's bottom was carried over to an extent with the style of her "3" shirt in the final design.

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (remake)[]

  • In this remake project intended as an updated, alternate universe kind of sequel to the first series, Jun's backstory from the Fantastic TV Collection vol.3 was affirmed in her official settings. She would retain her original G-3 motorcycle, possibly redesigned and modernized, rather than having the Auto Swan.

New Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, aka "New Gatchaman" (1998)[]

  • While Jun would keep her name and her place on the team as the Swan, her backstory was heavily different, involving her on a search for a missing sister.
  • Jun would have also worn a full bodysuit like the men on the team, finally doing away with panty shots. The concept of her having some sort of bodysuit was, however, eventually implemented in the NTT East Gatchaman ads animated by Tatsunoko (and the live action versions with SMAP).
